Don't you **LOVE** the title? I have to thank the Kensington editors for that. I did gain a pound just looking at them all. Mmmm.

I've got a juicy murder planned, lots of interesting characters besides Sasha, her sister Maddie, their parents, Uncle Ross, Aunt Eve -- Mary Kate, Elle, Detective Mason, his new assistant, Flynn and his new flame, plus Jay Kirby and Santa Bear. And some troublesome villagers. There's something about the holidays that bring out the best (and worst) in people. I could call this book "Three Funerals and a Wedding" (shh, it's a secret), but Christmas takes the cake. Well, it has some fun events in Silver Hollow, like the Oktobear Fest -- kicking off with Sasha and Maddie's Cran-beary Tea Party at a new tea room in the village. There's also Bears on Parade -- the bears are resin and fiberglass sculptures, painted and decorated, which don't parade around, since the visitors do the parading. Maddie's design was chosen, The Polka Bear, along with several other artists including Sasha's new flame, woodcarver Jay Kirby.

But of course, there's also mayhem and murder! Sasha's rival from high school, Holly Parker, brings a heap of trouble to the village -- and like the poor bear on the cover, Sasha's peaceful world tumbles. While cozy mysteries always end with justice, murder still takes its toll on everyone.

Don't miss out on Sasha Silverman's latest adventure in the Shamelessly Adorable Teddy Bear cozy mysteries!

So what is next on my writing schedule? Since I'm also one-half of the D.E. Ireland team, my friend and I will be returning to With a Little Bit of Blood which is coming out this April. Yes, you heard that right! We're almost halfway through, and it should be another great historical mystery featuring the clever Eliza Doolittle and the irascible Professor Higgins as an amateur sleuthing team.

So far, TWO books in that series have been nominated for Agatha Awards -- book 1, Wouldn't It Be Deadly, and Get Me to the Grave On Time, book 3. We're hoping book 4 will entertain fans with a fun "country estate" romp that includes intrigue, murder, and mystery in late 1913.

If you're like me and love G.B. Shaw's Pygmalion and My Fair Lady, where we take his fascinating characters and extend them into a historical mystery series, check out our books by clicking here.

So if you're not enjoying the cold, snowy, frigid January weather, stay warm by curling up to a cozy fireplace with a few good books! I'll be reading a few MONK books by author Hy Conrad, Old Scores by Will Thomas, and several cozies on my Kindle. Whatever you do this winter, STAY WARM!

Meg

New Bear!

Who can resist a teddy bear? We also took her as a young toddler to the Toledo Zoo to see the pandas from China back in 198-- um... well, let's not go there. Amanda is now quite old enough to drive herself to the zoo, ha!

Anyway, my editor sent me this bearoscope:

"You are a very distinctive personality with a strong visual aesthetic. People in England and France dressed in costumes, with the lowborn appearing as kings or queens as well as the reverse, leading animals into churches, hanging paper tails on people. And then Pope Gregory XIII issued a decree in the late 1500s about adopting a standard calendar in Christian countries. The old Julian one was replaced by the Gregorian one - moving the new year from the end of March to the first of January. Hey, not everyone found out via the Internet or Facebook in those days! So the people who kept "feasting the fools" were called “April fools.” Or some such nonsense.

In France, it was great fun to slap a paper fish on friends' backs and yell "Poisson d'Avril"! Oh, sure. Real fun. I suppose it's better than "Kick Me", but still.

The first documented "prank" was in 1698, when the Tower of London posted a sign. No joke! Oh, there were lions in the menagerie. But no washing.

Over the years, more and more people got into the "game" of pranks -- here's a website with the TOP TEN APRIL FOOL'S JOKES OF ALL TIME. There's actually 100, but I figured you'll be so busy with pulling your own pranks you only have time to read ten. The storm stretched from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, New York, and don't forget Canada! To the left, you can see the line of cars stranded for hours on Lakeshore Drive in Chicago. Lots of people lost power. It was one of the biggest storms in history. Crazy!

So, last week a monster storm called Jonas hit the East Coast. Hoo boy, it started on a Saturday and piled up the snow (depending on where you lived) from George, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia, eastern Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey - which also suffered terrible flooding on the coast - New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Lake effect snow also fell in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. AND Canada, of course.

So why didn't the Groundhog Day blizzard get a cool name, like Winter Storm Phil? Named for Punxsutawney Phil, that famous fat woodchuck - or whistlepig - names for the large ground squirrel with no discernable psychic ability to predict the weather by its shadow. Remember that come February 2nd. How neat if that 2011 blizzard had been named Winter Storm Whistlepig? But the Weather Channel only began naming winter storms in 2012. Dang.

Hey, I'm just glad February is almost here. As for Groundhog Day, I'd rather watch the hilarious movie with Bill Murray. The setting, the townspeople, the redo's of each day are truly memorable.

Even Phil takes a spin in the film. Not the real Phil, of course. He had a stunt double. Bit Bill Murray, too.

Unfortunately, February is one day extra - being a Leap Year - so that means winter is gonna stick around for another 24 hours. At least. If not six to eight weeks after February 2nd. Sigh.

Here's a few photos to cheer you up until spring. Florida, Hawaii, Antigua... aaaaaaaaaaaaah.....

Now weren't those nicer than this one? What they may not know (or understand) is how difficult it is. Oh, sure, it's just like writing letter. Um, NO. A college essay. Guess again. Short story then - couldn't I pound that baby out in a day or two? Riiiiiiight. Go ahead, see how far you get. I'm cheering you on! Really. Because it's an accomplishment anyone ought to be proud of attempting.

Here's a reality check, though. The short story I wrote for a western romance anthology took me two months. Yup. Only about 11,500 words. Piece of cake! Not really. It's MUCH harder to write shorter than an 80,000 word novel. Oh, yes - that's EIGHTY THOUSAND. Although one of my Christmas novellas only took me a week, but that's rare. For some reason, the plot (in my head) sort of wrote itself, and every author has one instance up their sleeve. But not every story is like that. Most are like wrestling a greased pig in a mud puddle.

From Frank Leslie's Illustrated History of the Civil War

Those mysteries on the shelf? Three to nine months (yes, like a baby in the womb) of hard, nose-to-the-grindstone work. With engaging characters, a logical plot (with red herrings, suspects, etc. no less), a realistic setting, a satisfactory solution - meaning justice at the end for a mystery - and many include recipes or tips on brewing tea, coffee, sewing quilts, etc. That's extra work.

But everyone has to start somewhere. I'd been reading books with the thought of writing for years before I started, in a notebook, while waiting at the doctor's office. I think I wrote a page or two, and then decided to write on a typewriter - and switched to a computer for editing ease. I spent years "learning the craft" of what a story entails (forget formula - you may think romances, westerns, mysteries, thrillers all have one, but try to sell something like that). Starting is hard. Finishing that first manuscript was the hardest thing I ever did.

Oh, and then revision. Because sure, you can write, finish, and publish. Selling is another story.

So I wrote my second manuscript when the first one didn't sell. Revised the first, almost sold it to Harlequin, and wrote a third. And a fourth. And a fifth. Then a sixth - my first mystery - as my thesis for the MA Writing Popular Fiction program at Seton Hill University. Even THAT didn't sell, so I revised number 3 into a western mystery, sold it, won an award. Was I famous? Hardly.

I had to face following up an award-winning book, Double Crossing, with a sequel that was better than the first book. Double or Nothing won a Laramie. Nice. I followed up with several novellas, just to try my hand at writing shorter, adding The Key to Love, Santa Paws, Santa Claws, and Home for the Holidays, along with a few short stories in anthologies.

But I wasn't focused on awards or even the number of book covers I could accumulate on a website or my Amazon Author page. I wanted a real career, and that meant snagging a New York City Big 5 publisher. And all those years of hearing editors at conferences ("We're always looking for an unusual premise") finally paid off with a two-book contract from St. Martin's Press for my writing partner and I with D.E. Ireland's Eliza Doolittle & Henry Higgins series.

Are we famous yet? I hope we're getting there. Wouldn't It Be Deadly was nominated for a Best Historical Agatha Award earlier this year, among the best writers in the field - Victoria Thompson, Charles Todd, and Rhys Bowen. We both were so honored. My writing partner sold a cozy series of her own and I'm hoping for one as well. We'll both use other pseudonyms, too. The work continues. The mountain peak is still ahead.

So whether you're starting to write, in the middle of finishing a book or story, or on your way to snagging an agent or a publisher. don't stop. Don't get discouraged by the huge numbers of other authors. Dream. Celebrate each success, small or large. Persistence is the key.

Only you can determine the outcome.

It's World Teachers' Day

It's WORLD TEACHERS' DAY! Move Your Blooming Corpse explores the Edwardian racing world and the fascinating characters who people it, from jockeys to duchesses, in this delightful traditional mystery that will appeal to fans of British mysteries. Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins are at the posh Royal Ascot, the biggest horse racing event of the season. Eliza's father is the new co-owner of a champion racehorse, and Eliza and Henry are excited to cheer the Donegal Dancer on to victory. However, their idyllic outing takes a serious turn when a victim is trampled during the Gold Cup race and someone is found murdered in the stables.

With time running out before the upcoming Eclipse Stakes, she and Higgins investigate jealous spouses, suffragettes and the colorful co-owners of the Donegal Dancer. But can they outrace the murderer, or will there be another blooming corpse at the finish line?

Some early reviews are rolling in, including Booklist—"The snappy pace and fun banter keep the story moving, while details about the suffragette movement, horse racing, fashion, and foods of the Edwardian era add plenty of appealing color, as does the quirky supporting cast.”

One reader says, "The plotting is intricate, the characters fresh and interesting, and the pace fast-moving... She also teaches us about the basic supplies you will need to start your own glassblowing shop, gives us a quick safety lesson, and then gives some advice on teaching classes.
